Questions
1) First Impressions:
  • How did the performance begin?
A single female dancer on stage in a position with one leg bent, one straight and one arm down with the other in a specific single hand mudra.
  • What were some of your first impressions at the beginning of the dance?
The start of the dance is quite slow and not very interesting but her facial expressions are really well done.
  • Did the dance have musical accompaniment? How did you like the music?
Yes there is music to go with the dance, it sounds like something traditional however I do not like the music choice.
  • What made the strongest impression on you as the dance progressed?
Her facial expressions throughout the dance were really consistent and visible. Her hand mudras, hand and feet movements were also really specific which made the dance interesting to watch and made it look more polished.
  • Can you describe this dance? Did it have a distinct beginning, middle, and end?
The dance started off quite slow in timing and the movements were quite smooth but as the dance progressed they started to pick up pace and were more distinct and sharp movements and shapes. Halfway through the dance she started to go back to the slow timing and more spread out movements and more pauses in between shapes and sequences. This occurs when she starts to move onto the ground which also comes with a change of emotion from happy and constantly smiling to looking more sad and confused. The dancer then goes back to the quicker timing and sharp movements which doesn't change back into slow for the ending, it remains the same until she gets into her end pose.
  • Did you have a favorite dancer?
There was only one dancer in the clip i was questioning so i only had her to analyse. But she was still a good dancer and i felt that she had really defined movements and good facials that she conveyed well in such a way that you would think she was actually feeling those certain emotions.
  • What elements of the production (music, costumes, lighting, scenery) made the biggest impression on you?
The costume and jewelry went well together and looked nice on the dancer, it fitted her well and matched the dance style. It was a bright colour which was interesting to look at and also had many different aspects in the one outfit. The different movements throughout the dance were also performed to a high standard and were all different variations which also made the dance interesting to watch as there was always something new to look at.
2) Historical, Social, and Cultural Context:
  • How does this dance reflect the personal history of the choreographer or the culture of a particular country or culture?
  • Does the musical accompaniment seem to reflect a particular culture, style, or historical period?
  • Put yourself in the role of the dancers for this performance. How is their participation and preparation for the performance similar to or different from your own and other audience members’?
3) The Dancer/s Bodies:
  • How was the dancer/s bodies used in this dance?
She used it to make lots of different shapes and poses. She used all arms and legs for different things the whole time. Different body bases were used such as her feet and then later on her bum and then her knees which i assume was to add variety.
  • What different body parts did they use?
She used her arms, legs, hands, feet and also her head in different parts of the dance. Her hand were used mostly for different mudras. Her head moved depending on the position of her body and the emotion she was displaying at the time. Her legs were positioned in different angles so her body was at different levels during the dance. Her arms were also added to change the shape of her body and the way she would pose.
  • Did they seem to move skillfully?
  • Can you explain the roles that the skills of body alignment and dance technique play in a dance performance?
  • Do you know when these skills are important and when they might not be?
  • How can you use what you learned from the dance you have seen to understand these concepts more fully?
  • What is it about the dancers’ training that allows them to use their bodies expressively?
  • How did the musical accompaniment affect the way the dancers moved?
  • How do dancers train their bodies? What do they have to do to get ready for a performance?
  • Can you compare the ways dancers warm up and prepare their bodies for dancing with the way that athletes warm up and prepare for competitions?
4) Production Considerations:
  • How effectively did the dance incorporate costumes, and sound?
  • How did these elements complement the movement and the choreography?
  • Were the costumes elaborate or simple?
  • Why do you think the choreographer and costume designer made this choice?
